Bluff's Story

Bluff came to Susan Jan Hornstein, owner and founder of Well Trained Horses, a rescue stable for abused and discarded horses, after a successful racing career. But the cost of that career was not small.  Bluff was unruly and very hard to manage when he was away from the track itself.  His nickname was “manhater”.  When he was in his stall fear caused him to turn and spin endlessly.  The “cure” for this behavior was to tie him with baling twine to hold him in place. Bluff didn’t spin any more but he was left with a terror that was as restricting as the twine that tied him.

When his career was over and after a few false starts Bluff found his way to Well Trained Horses. At first he couldn’t be easily approached at all, and then only by women. But after six months of slow, loving, and deliberate care, Bluff was open to being approached and handled by men.

After two years and much work Bluff is a trusting, gentle, and confident horse. In fact he is the alpha horse of all the horses at Well Trained Horses. He is genuinely curious about his surroundings and seeks out attention by nuzzling and reaching out to anyone who approaches him.  Bluff can still be spooked or startled but these days if Bluff is uneasy it is because a human is uneasy.

Bluff is now ready for the last step of his rehabilitation – he is ready for a new home and a  best friend for life.  His new owner will enjoy the rewards of the efforts of the many people who have worked with and loved Bluff over the years.  With a more skilled rider he is ready for trail rides, rides in the arena, and for the care and attention of one owner who who will love him unconditionally.

Bluff and his new owner will be part of Well Trained Hoses for life. If any help is needed or issues arise we will be able to offer assistance.

Well Trained Horses Adoption Policies & Promises

We always seek to make the best possible matches.

We want adopted horses to improve their lives – stalls or paddocks with daily turnout, access to room to move, pastures, permanent pasture space, or whatever will be a good fit for a pasture pal or a riding horse.

We want horses to have a primary caretaker, and get more time and attention than they would at a rescue.

We offer support, help, and assistance with your new partner and 3 free lessons. We want to work with you to make this the best horse partnership possible.

New caretakers must be willing to stay in contact with Well Trained Horses via email, telephone, and/or traditional mail--we love pictures & stories.

New caretakers must agree not to resell the horse they’ve adopted from Well Trained Horses. We are looking for homes for horses with caretakers for life.

If transferring ownership becomes necessary, you agree in advance to be in touch with Well Trained Horses, and together, work out a plan that with which we agree. We encourage you to take the lead but will work with you during the process and must approve any new caretakers. Well Trained Horses will take back the adopted horse in case all re-homing efforts are unsuccessful.
